What is a Work-based Learning (WBL) Experience?
A Work-based Learning Experience is about providing more than basic job experience to students. For an organization to offer students a comprehensive experience that helps support their college and/or career readiness, some additional guidance is below:

Businesses & Employers

When you register your business or organization in the Future Workforce Finder Database, you can choose from the following menu of Work-based Learning opportunities to offer to students:
- Job Shadows
- Student Internships
- Classroom Visits
- Business Tours
- South Dakota Week of Work Experiences
- Virtual Work-based Learning Experiences
Teachers, Counselors, and Career Advisors looking to provide Work-based Learning experiences for South Dakota students will be able to search and find your business based on the information you provided in your business profile. An educator or Career Advisor will be able to send a request for more information and an email will be sent to you.
Yes. Once your business has created a profile, you can search the teacher database to find educators and Career Advisors who are looking to connect their students to Work-based Learning experiences. You can search by keyword, city/location of a school, or the types of WBL experiences an educator or Career Advisor is looking for.
Your business information will be used by the State of South Dakota to contact you regarding Work-based Learning opportunities. Teachers and school administrators will only receive your contact information if you approve it. If a school staff or state employee is interested in what your business could offer their student(s), they will be able to request that you share your contact information. Look for emails from the Future Workforce Finder regarding requests for your contact information.

Teachers & School Administrators

When a business registers their organization in the Future Workforce Finder Database, they can choose from the following menu of Work-based Learning opportunities to offer to your students:
- Job Shadows
- Student Internships
- Classroom Visits
- Business Tours
- South Dakota Week of Work Experiences
- Virtual Work-based Learning Experiences
Once you have created a teacher account in the Future Workforce Finder database, you can use the search business feature to find Work-based Learning experiences for your classroom and students. You can search by keyword, city/location of a business, or by career cluster.
When you find a business match, click the name of the point of contact for the business, and then click Request Contact. A message will be sent to the business contact letting them know you are requesting additional information.
No. Only businesses, educators, and Career Advisors have access to Future Workforce Finder. The purpose of the Future Workforce Finder database is to connect industry and educators in order to provide meaningful career awareness, exploration, and immersion to South Dakota K-12 students.
Yes. A student can earn credit for a Work-based Learning Experience they participate in through the Future Workforce Finder database if the activities the student participates in align with South Dakota Department of Education Capstone Experience Standards.
